The ALGHE MWANI initiative, part of the SEED Initiative and led by LISHE social enterprise, is focused on transforming traditional seaweed farming into a sustainable, women-led social enterprise. It builds on Pemba Island’s strengths in seaweed production to create eco-friendly, toxin-free cosmetic products.
Objectives

Empower women and foster community resilience through economic independence.

Create a sustainable, local value chain for seaweed—from farming and lab development to transformation and marketing.

Train women entrepreneurs in quality processing, assurance, and marketing.

Maximize value addition and efficiency in seaweed product development.

Integrate scientific expertise (agriculture, biochemistry, design) to unlock global market potential.

Preserve the cultural heritage of the Swahili Coast.
