Project description

The ALGHE MWANI initiative, part of the SEED Initiative and led by LISHE social enterprise, is focused on transforming traditional seaweed farming into a sustainable, women-led social enterprise. It builds on Pemba Island’s strengths in seaweed production to create eco-friendly, toxin-free cosmetic products.

Objectives

  • Empower women and foster community resilience through economic independence.

  • Create a sustainable, local value chain for seaweed—from farming and lab development to transformation and marketing.

  • Train women entrepreneurs in quality processing, assurance, and marketing.

  • Maximize value addition and efficiency in seaweed product development.

  • Integrate scientific expertise (agriculture, biochemistry, design) to unlock global market potential.

  • Preserve the cultural heritage of the Swahili Coast.
